All PLANET EARTH groups supports: GREENPEACE

Let's create the biggest sanctuary on Earth

More and more people within and outside of the tuna industry are finally realizing that their business depends on sustaining fish populations. To truly transform an industry riddled with ocean destruction and labor abuse, Thai Union and its global brands like Chicken of the Sea must stand up and fight for real reform in the industry.

They must stop using poorly regulated and destructive fishing methods that needlessly kill vulnerable marine wildlife. No one wants to buy tuna with a side of sea turtle or shark.

BIRD OF THE WEEK — SWAMP SPARROW — PLANET EARTH BIRD WORLD group

PLANET EARTH BIRD WORLD has over 1,500 members and over 96,000 photos and videos.

ABC

BIRD OF THE WEEK

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Melospiza georgiana
POPULATION: 22 million
TREND: Increasing
HABITAT: Breeds in freshwater wetlands; during migration and in winter found in brushy habitats near water.

The Swamp Sparrow, like the Song Sparrow, is often dismissed as a “little brown job.” But a closer look reveals a bird richly colored in earthy tones of russet, brown, and cool gray, set off by a white throat and reddish cap.

Swamp Sparrows can be found throughout the eastern United States and boreal Canada, preferring marshes with tall vegetation and scattered shrubs.

This bird is a short-distance migrant, only moving as far south as central Mexico, with much of the population wintering in the southeastern United States.

UNHCR — United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees — PLANET EARTH FLOWERS groups

PLANET EARTH FLOWERS has over 2,000 members and over 82,000 photos.

Millions of women and girls among the world’s ever-growing refugee population, education remains an aspiration, not a reality.

Good examples abound, and many countries are making changes to help more girls from both refugee and local communities attend school. Our task is to make sure this happens everywhere, and to help create stronger communities that unite to find solutions to shared challenges.

AMERICAN BIRD CONSERVANCY — STEEPEST POPULATION DEClINES OF ANY SONG BIRD — GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER — PLANET EARTH BUTTERFLIES, BEES, BUGS, AND INSECTS group

PLANET EARTH BUTTERFLIES, BEES, BUGS, AND INSECTS has over 3,900 members and over 111,000 photos and videos.

ABC

The Golden-winged Warbler is a dynamo, practically buzzing with activity as it moves through the trees. It also undertakes an amazing migration, traveling from its breeding grounds in the northeastern United States to wintering areas in Central and South America.

Minnesota's northern forests are home to nearly 50 percent of the world's Golden-winged Warbler population during the summer breeding season. Photo by Greg Lavaty

The species is notable for another reason: It has suffered one of the steepest population declines of any songbird. Since 1966, the species has been reduced by 66 percent, mostly because of habitat loss on its breeding grounds.
