SCIENTIFIC NAME: Sterna dougallii
POPULATION: About 24,000 adults (North America)
TREND: Stable worldwide; population in northeast U.S. listed as endangered; other U.S. populations threatenend
HABITAT: Barrier islands, coastal salt marshes

GREENPEACE

More and more people within and outside of the tuna industry are finally realizing that their business depends on sustaining fish populations. To truly transform an industry riddled with ocean destruction and labor abuse, Thai Union and its global brands like Chicken of the Sea must stand up and fight for real reform in the industry.

They must stop using poorly regulated and destructive fishing methods that needlessly kill vulnerable marine wildlife. No one wants to buy tuna with a side of sea turtle or shark.

BIRD OF THE WEEK — RED-CROWNED PARROT — PLANET EARTH BIRD WORLD group

PLANET EARTH BIRD WORLD has over 1,300 members and over 68,000 photos and videos.

BIRD OF THE WEEK

RED-CROWNED PARROT

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Amazona viridigenalis
POPULATION: 1,500-2,500 (wild)
IUCN STATUS: Endangered
TREND: Decreasing
HABITAT: Lowland forests of northeastern Mexico; introduced in several U.S. states.

This stocky parrot is also known as Green-cheeked or Red-crowned Amazon, or in Spanish vernacular, Loro Tamaulipeco or Loro Cabeza Roja. Red-crowned Parrot can be told from other local parrots by its red forehead, pale bill, and black-tipped nape and back feathering.

Like Thick-billed Parrot, Red-crowned Parrots are threatened by habitat loss and illegal trapping for the pet trade. Steep declines within the species’ limited range have led to its designation as endangered on the IUCN Red List. It’s also a candidate for listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA).

BIRD OF THE WEEK — NORTHERN BOBWHITE — PLANET EARTH BIRD WORLD group

PLANET EARTH BIRD WORLD group has over 1,300 members and over 67,000 photos and videos.

NORTHERN BOBWHITE

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Colinus virginianus
POPULATION: 5.8 million
TREND: Decreasing
HABITAT: Old fields and hedgerows, grasslands, open forests

Also known as Virginia quail or bobwhite quail, the Northern Bobwhite is native to the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The clear, whistled “bobwhite” call was once a common sound throughout the birds’ range. It’s much more rare today; populations plunged between 1966 and 2014, resulting in an overall decline of 85 percent, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey.
