RISE OF THE INTERIOR LEAST TERN — PLANET EARTH LANDSCAPES group

PLANET EARTH LANDSCAPES has over 7,600 members and over 269,000 photos and videos.

The Interior Least Tern, once considered rare, may soon be taken off the Endangered Species list, thanks to a partnership of ABC, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).

The success is in part due to management techniques that keep predators off nesting sandbars on the Lower Mississippi River.

GREENPEACE

Following a four-day  Powershift: Young and Rising convergence, volunteers from PowerShift  an intersectionnal growing movement that gathered youth from all backgrounds across Canada – are marching today in a rally organized for climate justice.

Starting at Parliament Hill, the rally will benefit from the presence of  frontline land and water defenders, black and communities of colour as well as various social and environmental grassroots groups leaders who will make the opening speeches before setting out for the hour long march. This march yet another pressing expression of a growing young mobilization movement spreading wide across Canada to highlight the urgency of climate change, and how climate justice intersects with social and environmental justice.

BIRD OF THE WEEK — HARRIS’S HAWK — PLANET EARTH BIRD WORLD group

PLANET EARTH BIRD WORLD has over 1,500 members and over 100,000 photos and videos.

BIRD OF THE WEEK

HARRIS’S HAWK

BIRD OF THE WEEK: February 22, 2019SCIENTIFIC NAME: Parabuteo unicinctus
POPULATION: 55 million
TREND: Stable
HABITAT: Resident in desert scrub, lowland savanna, or marshy open country.

Harris’s Hawk is found from the southwestern United States through Mexico and in appropriate habitats as far south as Argentina. One of the species’ interesting behaviors is called “back stacking,” when up to four Harris’s Hawks stand on top of each other while perched.

Back-stacking Behavior

Back stacking is actually a sensible adaption to the Harris’s Hawk’s wide-open habitats. The hawk on top gets a better view for hunting, making up for the lack of elevated perches in the landscape.

Let's create the biggest sanctuary on Earth

More and more people within and outside of the tuna industry are finally realizing that their business depends on sustaining fish populations. To truly transform an industry riddled with ocean destruction and labor abuse, Thai Union and its global brands like Chicken of the Sea must stand up and fight for real reform in

the industry.

They must stop using poorly regulated and destructive fishing methods that needlessly kill vulnerable marine wildlife. No one wants to buy tuna with a side of sea turtle or shark.
