GREENPEACE — This Company Promised to Stop Deforestation. But We Caught Them Out — REFLECTIONS — PLANET EARTH LANDSCAPES group

PLANET EARTH LANDSCAPES has over 7,200 members and over 249,000 photos and videos.

GREENPEACE

In 2013, Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) bowed to pressure from Greenpeace, other NGOs, and its customers, promising to turn off its bulldozers and end its addiction to deforestation. Yet since then, almost 8,000 hectares of forest and peatland has been cleared in two concessions linked to APP and its parent company the Sinar Mas Group.

Here’s what we found: almost 8,000 hectares of forest and peatland has been cleared in two concessions linked to APP and its parent company the Sinar Mas Group since 2013. We put these allegations to APP and Sinar Mas, but the group failed to provide a credible response or to take meaningful action.

BIRD OF THE WEEK — CHILEAN WOODSTAR — PLANET EARTH BIRD WORLD group

PLANET EARTH BIRD WORLD has over 1,400 members and over 91,000 photos and videos.

BIRD OF THE WEEK

CHILEAN WOODSTAR

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Eulidia yarrellii
POPULATION: 350-500 individuals
IUCN STATUS: Endangered
TREND: Decreasing
HABITAT: Native scrub in Chilean desert river valleys.

The beautiful Chilean Woodstar is a tiny hummingbird, only the size of a large moth. At around 3 inches long, it’s the smallest bird in Chile. The species has a very small distribution, too, and is as endangered as its close relative, the Esmeraldas Woodstar of Ecuador.

Habitat loss is the key factor behind the species’ decline from at least 1,500 birds in 2003 to roughly 400 birds in 2012 — a loss of more than 80 percent.

NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY — Hundreds of bird species are on a track toward extinction. If these species blink out, we’ll have just one species to blame: ours. — PLANET EARTH OUR HOME group

No Bird Extinctions Allowed

The situation of the Wood Thrush is dire, but 91 other bird species are much worse off. These are the Alliance for Zero Extinction bird species of the Americas —those found only in a single site and surviving on the edge.

Take Stresemann’s Bristlefront of Brazil: This unique, burrow-nesting species numbers fewer than 15 individuals. Hawai’i’s Maui Parrotbill has as few as 500 surviving members.
